European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
